We know you've probably bought
Myst eight or nine times by this point, but we thought you'd still like to know that a new iteration will soon be available -- this time, for the PSP. Hoplite Research, who collaborated with the adventure game's original developer Cyan Worlds to
put the game on DS in December 2007, is dropping the game on the PlayStation Network next Thursday. Much like the DS version, the PSP port will contain all the
Myst non-action you know and love, as well as the bonus Rime Age that appeared on Nintendo's handheld.
What the press release that revealed all this information lacked, however, was a price. We've contacted Hoplite to try and discern this crucial piece of information. We'll let you know as soon as we find out.

Maybe the PSP's better screen res will allow you to read your clues, etc. I was SOO excited when the DS version came out and it was unplayable.
Trep @ Jul 11th 2009 6:45PM
I have the original on Sega Saturn. Didn't have a clue what to do :(
sony boy @ Jul 11th 2009 7:53PM
no manual???
vid @ Jul 11th 2009 8:21PM
Good on you! The Saturn version of the game was my first experience with the series, and I feel like I got lucky there. I still remember passing the manual for my Saturn copy of the game to Rand Miller (one of the creators, also portrays Atrus and Achenar, the blue brother, in Myst) and seeing his face light up as he said "Oh! This was one of the good ones!"
It seems like a lot of the various ports tended to be done by companies who had little interest in doing justice to the product, particularly the DS and PSP ports.
kirbyfan @ Jul 12th 2009 12:13PM
the psp version sucked? do you have a time machine?
kirbyfan @ Jul 12th 2009 12:20PM
crap... I didn't know this was just a downloadable rerelease. feel free to slap me in the face.
Evi1d33d @ Jul 11th 2009 6:49PM
I think they should port a newer version (3 or 4) of Myst instead of the first one. Since the game is just a long interactive movie it shouldn't matter which version they port.
squeehunter @ Jul 11th 2009 10:17PM
Myst 4 fit on two DVDs so they'd have to compress it a lot.
Nick @ Jul 12th 2009 1:54AM
Well they did cut the size for Myst for iPhone in half with the latest update. Maybe they are learning a few tricks to manage size.
And additionally with the hard drive size of the iPhone growing, space concerns may become less of an issue.
I think with Riven though there is an issue of video boxes within video boxes or something to that nature. Which isn't possible on the iPhone architecture. You would think the PSP wouldn't have this issue though.
Kadamon @ Jul 11th 2009 6:53PM
And yet...despite all of these ports and playing almost every single one of them, I've not beaten the damned game once.
Am I a failure? :(
Jawmuncher @ Jul 11th 2009 6:58PM
No you're not i have played this game countless times and never beat it.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jul 11th 2009 7:13PM
im so happy im not alone in this. i had it on pc when i was about 10, i loved it even though i dint understand half of it. cant remeber where i got stuck but i think i might get the game again just to relive the memories. i might be able to clock it now im 24
samik @ Jul 11th 2009 8:00PM
Yes - your life sucks. Your name will be synonymous with failure for generations to come, who will laugh at you for being the one who could not complete Myst
samik @ Jul 11th 2009 8:00PM
And I bet you never managed to solve the Rubik cube either, did you, you pathetic loser?
Arno @ Jul 11th 2009 8:10PM
I have fond memories of playing the original way back when it first came out with my dad. My memory is a little hazy but I think we beat it. Well I didn't really do anything but I think I watched him beat it and he was super excited about it. At the end you choose from a red or blue book and you decide whether to banish some guy forever or not. Or something like that...?
Years later I picked it up and attempted to play it myself and found it to be one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I'm always excited when they announce a port and tell myself that this will be the time I play it, then it comes out and I play a whole 5 minutes of it before putting it down.
shibathedog @ Jul 12th 2009 12:33PM
SEMI-SPOILER:
I love how big of a slap in the face it is once you finally beat it. Basically the entire game was getting that fireplace code and if you already know what it is you can beat the game in 5 minutes or less (depending on how long it takes you to run around the island and hit all the switches and enter that fireplace code which takes awhile)
I wonder if my original copy will even run on Vista, I remember last time I played it I had to install some ancient copy of quicktime because the new one wasn't compatible for some reason. (Both ran alongside each other fine though)
Tyler @ Jul 11th 2009 7:03PM
This game gets ported more than Tetris and it sucks ass 20x more.
Michael Anderson @ Jul 11th 2009 7:25PM
Myst for PSP was already release even before the DS version - just not in the US.
The iPhone version is excellent, BTW ... and cheap.
Scuffles @ Jul 11th 2009 7:28PM
~.~ why don't they release something like I dunno ..... Star Control 3, now that would be interesting.
Tho I guess this is an obligitory port .... you can't be consitered a game system these days without sporting Myst or Dragons lair
Bam! @ Jul 11th 2009 8:05PM
The original Myst is the only one I havn't beaten. Pretty much because I'm a little too young to have played it when it first came out and now it's pretty much like playing a powerpoint presentation. I need to get my hands on Real Myst or whatever the URU walk around version is.
Heavytoka @ Jul 11th 2009 7:55PM
Man this game brings back memories lol
Nozzinja @ Jul 11th 2009 7:59PM
Awesome!!
An interactive screensaver for the PSP!
/saarcasm
note: If you like myst im sorry..
nriveraexpress @ Jul 11th 2009 8:04PM
Zzzzzz.....
kirbyfan @ Jul 12th 2009 12:15PM
how the @%$# does this guy get upvoted put tyler gets downvoted?
eat my face @ Jul 12th 2009 3:04PM
cuz you dont insult the all mighty tetris my dear friend
whylekat @ Jul 11th 2009 8:09PM
Bah. After the excellent touch screen controls on the iPhone version, I feel like this will be a step backwards.. Not trolling, as I'm sure I'll get down voted.. Just making a point that The game was originally point & click with a mouse.. The Touch controls is the only obvious way to go about it to me.
Comtar @ Jul 11th 2009 9:31PM
I agree and take it a step farther.
This should not cost anymore then the iPhone version.
Everyone is saying the PSPGo is supposed to compete with iPhone games as a form of downloadable games. Then to be competitive the prices should be the same.
whylekat @ Jul 11th 2009 9:53PM
So on iPhone it's $5.99 and it's 533 megs. What's it gonna be on psp? $30 and like 4-6gigs!
Joseph @ Jul 12th 2009 10:07AM
ya touch controls may SEEM to be the way to go for a game like myst, but playing the ds version was impossibly hard, as i had to tap every inch of the screen, instead in the pc psp etc. versions you have an on screen cursor which gives you hints on where you should click so in a way touch screens are a double edged sword, and not everything that uses a mouse can translate as easily to a touch screen format as you would think.... if anything myst would be perfect for the wii, you get the, well as some people would call it "accuracy, and ease of use" of the wiimote(which i strongly disagree with) and an on screen cursor, so it suits it nicely.
whylekat @ Jul 12th 2009 1:25PM
I understand the DS complaints but on the iPhone/itouch it's handled way better. It's like night and day.
Emophia @ Jul 11th 2009 8:11PM
I live in the UK and I've seen Myst for the PSP tons of times in stores...
vid @ Jul 11th 2009 8:16PM
Part of me sees this a good news, because it could be additional revenue for Cyan Worlds to start making new games again. But it's also disheartening, because both the DS and PSP ports of the game are pretty terrible, and they turned off a lot of new players because of how badly powered they were.
The bonus Rime age serves as an excellent bridge from Myst to Riven. The problem is that Rime was originally built to be played in the realtime 3D remake of Myst, "realMYST", and these ports include the additional age by using stills taken of Rime. This results in a pretty shocking shift in art style and quality, since it's something thrown together by Hoplite instead of Cyan.
If you really want to play Myst, it shouldn't be terribly hard to find one of the various releases of the original game for PC, or you could also play the beautiful 3D remake "realMYST" on GameTap. If you've got an iPhone, that's probably your best option, since it's currently the highest quality assets that have been provided for the original game, and at $6 for a pretty large adventure game, it's hard to pass up.

Really? Oh gee, that was REALLY fucking helpful you overrated HTML stack...
I'm going off to play a real game... 7th Guest.
Shadsy @ Jul 11th 2009 9:08PM
The PSP and DS ports are totally awful. But I agree, move onto Riven or something else?
Angel Mass @ Jul 11th 2009 9:41PM
How you know the PSP port is awful if it hasent been released yet??
rollntider @ Jul 11th 2009 9:51PM
maybe cause it was released in europe?
Shadsy @ Jul 12th 2009 1:57AM
And it already came out on UMD last year. This is just a downloadable version.
Scuffles @ Jul 11th 2009 10:11PM
Time will tell and I honestly think what they decide will be either insure my faith in sony for another 10 days or drive the last nail in the coffin.... if its more than $5-6 they are just out of touch with reality .... if its less then I will hold the candle of faith close to my heart until they bungle something else ....
Sorry if this eventually double posts ~,~
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 12th 2009 8:31AM
You realize Sony isn't the one publishing this and as such, has little influence over the price, right? The pricing will be determined by this publisher. And if a port of a game is too expensive for you, when this goes up on PSN, so does Unbound Saga. An all new brawler with a comic book theme for only $15.
Dale Thornton @ Jul 11th 2009 10:30PM
OMG!!!!!!
cannot believe this is coming to psp. i read about this game a few months before it came out years ago, really wanting to play it. but switched to console gaming and never got my chance. now finally i can give this game a go
seems awesome.
it better be in europe unlike MGS (which im still mad over)
xtremeholymuffin @ Jul 11th 2009 10:57PM
RIVEN! PLEASE!
FOR GODS SAKE JUST GIVE US RIVEN!
IT DOESN'T WORK ON VISTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
Shadsy @ Jul 12th 2009 1:58AM
This. Five million times over. And can we get it for the WII?
xtremeholymuffin @ Jul 12th 2009 4:22PM
I just don't get it....it's such a superior game, and if anything the world is smaller.
HDpurist @ Jul 12th 2009 1:56AM
Myst sucks. Don't waste your time on this crap.
whylekat @ Jul 12th 2009 3:31AM
Maybe you just suck at it and can't solve any of the puzzles....
ecco6t9 @ Jul 12th 2009 4:12AM
It is true about the Saturn version, it even holds up pretty well today.
Steve @ Jul 12th 2009 6:21AM
Is this the closest we'll ever get to a PS3 Myst?Or will the current resurgence of graphic/point n click adventures change all that?
Tez @ Jul 12th 2009 9:29AM
I'd rather have Riven. It was like Myst, only interesting.
Powerlord @ Jul 12th 2009 12:02PM
Just a nitpick, but the Rime age is originally from RealMYST for the PC.
Jacksons @ Jul 12th 2009 2:44PM
That darn game, took forever when I was a kid.
