Hands-on: Netflix on PS3
Posted Nov 6th 2009 4:21PM by Andrew Yoon
We've embedded a video overview of the service above. We'll admit that there are a few qualms with the presentation so far. First, the activation process is slow and requires the use of a computer -- there is no way to activate Netflix directly from the PS3. (You won't be able to use the PS3 internet browser for activation purposes either.) Second, the loading of cover art is suspiciously slow. Finally, there is no way to directly manage your Queue from the interface. While you'll be able to browse various categories, there is no Search capability. One benefit the PS3 has over the 360 in this regard is the built-in browser. You will be able to use the PS3's internet browser to manage your Queue. It's a baffling additional step, but it certainly is an added convenience. (ProTip: Use SELECT to add a bookmark to your PS3 internet browser.)
While the previous video we posted suggested otherwise, we can confirm that HD video works on PS3, and it works well. In fact, it's a bit faster than watching SD content, simply because you won't have to wait for the PS3 to switch between resolution modes. When browsing your queue, look for a tiny HD icon at the bottom of the screen to see if it will play in high-def. (The selection can be quite limited.) When judging the overall experience, however, we'd say starting movies required a longer buffer than when using the service on the 360 or PC. Netflix is a terrific value-add for the PlayStation 3, but minor interface issues make it clear that there's a lot of room for improvement -- perhaps when Netflix becomes a standard built-in feature of the OS next year?

It's free, so we can't really complain.

I couldn't agree more. Other than the scaling issues there really isn't anything to gripe about, it's a great addition to the PS3 if you're a Netflix subscriber. I experienced NONE of the slow downs they are talking about; not with setting it up, box art browsing or buffering. Maybe it's just my connection, but so far it's been pretty silky smooth.
ill trooper @ Nov 6th 2009 5:35PM
I really hate it when people say something like "It's free, so there's no room for complaint."
Not true. You can ask for better than this.
As consumers we are allowed to expect more from interface design, ease of use, and features. In this case, unless your grammy or girlfriend gave you your PS3 as a gift, it's not "free" at all. You also have to pay for a Netflix subscription. This is a feature that is also offered on the 360, and due to legal issues and contracts that we all have heard about, is implemented better and operates more sensibly on the 360, without a separate disc in the drive. So I await the improvements that are promised and hope it gets better than this relatively convoluted (compared to the 360) Netflix solution.
If you're willing to accept less than what is considered the standard (the 360's implementation of Netflix) then go ahead, but don't dismiss anyone who wants more. It's not 'free' and it should be better.
CaramelZappa @ Nov 6th 2009 5:58PM
People will always complain.
Sly @ Nov 6th 2009 6:31PM
just be glad we have netflix on PS3 now and that it works well.
Jason @ Nov 6th 2009 7:05PM
This is the nail in the coffin for my XBOX Live Gold subscription. For my tastes, there isn't anything worth playing online on XBOX so there's no reason to keep it.
XBox can't play MythTV streams.
XBox can't play Blu Ray
XBox can't play Little Big Planet or Valkyria Chronicles (there's no 360 exclusives I care about since I'm not into FPS or M rated games)
So now I'm wondering why I bought a 360 in the first place. PSWii for the win.
Mudassir @ Nov 7th 2009 1:49AM
The interface is the same as Roku box and all other BR players that have netflix, and I think it is better than the 360 one. But I also hate the NXE.
DigDug @ Nov 7th 2009 5:21AM
I got mine today, and I'm rather impressed. Sure it's not as seemless as the 360 one. But it's pretty good, and the TCO is less on PS3.
It's so good that I have no reason to keep my 360 or XBox LIve account (which NetFlix as the only reason I kept it going). It's up for renewal next month, and it won't be renewed. Along with the lack of decent games on Xbox, I think it's time to craigslist it, and use the cash to buy those PS3 titles I have been looking it.
Stew @ Nov 7th 2009 5:23AM
Actually done a comparision of SD content between my XBox (whilst I still have it) and my PS3 Netflix, and the SD content looks MASSIVELY better on the PS3. It must be down to the superior scaler in the PS3.
SolidSnakeX @ Nov 7th 2009 10:16AM
How much are we looking at for the PS3 ?..It looks ok but is it free for now until we get the PSN Service?..
Space @ Nov 7th 2009 12:43PM
well PSN has been free for 3 years, I don't see why it would change. also remember that netflix is available on tv's and blu-ray players for free too...microsoft is the only one that requires an extra fee. More than likely, this will continue to be free once it's embedded into the xmb.
so to answer your question, $299 or less if you don't mind buying used
katiepea @ Nov 7th 2009 2:03PM
@ill trooper sorry, but even with having to use a disc, this is better on the ps3 than my 360, i can now sell my 360 as i was only using it to stream netflix anyway, and the FREE part is due to the fact that you don't have to use a crappy xbox live subscription to use it.
HAAS599 @ Nov 8th 2009 9:19AM
Actually you can directly manage your instant watch queue. There are options to delete from list or add to list under every movie.
You cannot manage your DVD queue list from the disc based service but as the article says you can just do that from the browser.
Just wanted to make sure that was clear.
cody @ Nov 9th 2009 4:14AM
Just a heads up you can use play on and a silver xbox account and stream netflix and hulu to your xbox.

"we can confirm that HD video works on PS3, and it works well"
There, now shut up.
Andy @ Nov 6th 2009 6:53PM
HD isn't working for me. When I choose any movie or TV show, even when it says HD on it, they are all playing at 480p. I was wondering if maybe this is a connection issue, I don't have the greatest WiFi connection in my room.
Rob Accomando @ Nov 6th 2009 7:45PM
HD won't work if your wifi signal isn't strong enough or you have slow wifi
robert @ Nov 8th 2009 12:33AM
HD working for me, and as far as the scaling issue some have mentioned i just adjust the aspect ratio with my tv remote and it works fine.
once they build it into the PS3 firmware the whole service will probably be improved... anyone who doesn't see this as the stop-gap solution it is to get netflix on the PS3 before the holidays are deluding themselves.

Netflix has unparalleled selection.
but I, personally, am fond of the fact that the PSN video store doesn't charge membership fees.
AoE @ Nov 6th 2009 4:35PM
Right, but they charge you per-video instead. Netflix Watch Instantly is all you can watch. I mean if you truly want to get your money's worth, have nothing else to do, and have a large supply of no-doze on hand that's about 720 hours of video entertainment a month for $8.99. Let's see you get that much with your "free" service for the same price. ;)
DamonTheMoney @ Nov 6th 2009 4:44PM
I see what Charlie's saying. Personally, I'm quite a busy guy so I don't often find myself in a position to kick back with a good movie. So paying a monthly subscription for unlimited use would be a pointless endeavour for me. But when I do decide to relax with a good film I'm more than happy to use the Playstation Video store, so I can just buy a film whenever I want without having to feel as though I'm wasting my money with a subscription fees. It's pretty cheap for HD movies too (in comparison to buying a Blu-Ray, or even a DVD), and I get to keep it on my HardDrive and take it with me on my PSP if I'm travelling. So I'm willing to pay for that, more so than Netflix.
Not everybody has 720 hours to waste per month, AoE. So for some, the video store is actually a better alternative. Not for everybody, but I'm sure there are others in a similar position to myself.
charlie b. @ Nov 6th 2009 5:07PM
I'm with DamonTheMoney on this one.
I work a full time job, and I commute via Public Transit which only takes away from my free time.
so when I do get the time to chill with a rental, I like that the PSN will just let me pay for what I want to watch.
but if I had all the time in the world, I'd definitely go with Netflix.
this having been said, I really like that the PS3 offers such varied options for all types of movie fans.
plus, since I take public transit everywhere, I like being able to rent movies and view them on my PSP :)
johnnynumber5 @ Nov 6th 2009 5:30PM
PS3 does have a flash web browser that you can stream pretty much any content you want for free. TV shows, movies, YouTube and even live streams of sporting events. If I want a blockbuster high def movie I buy it on blu-Ray or I just download it on the Apple TV. Otherwise, Ill wait for it to hit my on demand or DVR it ... Otherwise if quality isn't all that important Ill stream it for free with the browser. I don't have a need for Netflix even though it's a good value.
Monica Dickey @ Nov 6th 2009 5:51PM
Netflix is awesome. For about $10 month you also get a rotating rental if you want something not on instant... But their instant stuff is pretty good too. I've found some cool movies on there, especially when I was willing to watch some older stuff.

HardBoiled2009 @ Nov 6th 2009 5:45PM
I would agree with you but ... I'm in Canada. so it can't do everything here. but it does do everything .. in the US. if you have netflix for PS3 i hope your enjoying it.
Steve-o @ Nov 6th 2009 11:40PM
@HardBoiled
Nope, it doesn't do everything in the US. You're forgetting an awesome little accessory that would make the PS3 really great in the US... PlayTV
calgaryalta @ Nov 7th 2009 12:52AM
I hope I don't have to wait years for this to be available in Canada like we did with iTunes video content.
Lurkero @ Nov 6th 2009 4:29PM
"The PS3 browser won't work for this."
Yeah good job Sony. Just rush that product out there without trying to make a good streamlined experience for the users. (...stupid PSPgo)
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 6th 2009 4:31PM
This is a Netflix developed system...complain about that if it remains in the standalone software next year.
Lurkero @ Nov 6th 2009 4:37PM
I'm positive that at some point Sony saw and approved this before allowing Netflix to send out the discs.
hallowhero @ Nov 6th 2009 4:37PM
If you're talking about the setup you kinda have to be on the screen at the same time or else it resets the activation code. Same thing happens with the 360 when you first set it up.
I just got done watching an episode of Heroes in HD with it and I must say it is pretty impressive. The HD is better for me on the PS3 than on the 360. Whenever I watched HD on 360 it was kinda grainy. After that I checked out an episode of Avatar in SD and it looks good, but I wish I could change the aspect ratio to 4:3.
AoE @ Nov 6th 2009 4:38PM
@Darth Bradwart,
It'll remain. You have to activate your device on a computer for the Xbox version of the service as well as for the Roku/Tivo/etc.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 6th 2009 4:40PM
Then if it's in both, why complain? At least you can manage your queue from the PS3 itself.
I stopped subscribing to Netflix a year ago (don't watch enough new movies to justify it, and Redbox is cheaper), so I didn't know. Thanks, AoE.
Etcee @ Nov 6th 2009 4:31PM
Just for fairness' sake, all three of the aforementioned qualms are true for xbox streaming as well. Netflix is the only reason I bother with a gold account. You can not manage your queue or search for titles, and a computer is required for activation. This appears to be the exact same service.
AoE @ Nov 6th 2009 4:41PM
Not quite exactly the same. The Xbox has the addition of the top 100 videos for each genre category available in addition to your queue. Also you can do limited queue management on the Xbox. You can delete items from your queue, and you can add anything found in the afore-mentioned genre categories to your queue as well.
EncodedNybble @ Nov 6th 2009 6:05PM
@AoE
In my PS3 version, when at a 'main page' for a video (at least for TV shows), there is an option for me to remove the selection. Seems like this implies you can remove from the queue too. I haven't tried it yet though.
robert @ Nov 9th 2009 11:44AM
AoE, did you watch the video? everything you just pointed out for the 360 version are also available on the PS3
Orchard Pear @ Nov 6th 2009 4:30PM
Thanks for your impressions, guys.
Glad to see it works well. The Netflix experience on 360 wasn't a bed of roses when it first started up, either, so there's always room for improvement. I'm sure once the streaming exclusivity deal with Microsoft expires, and the PS3 gets an integrated solution, they'll be about equal.
Trep @ Nov 6th 2009 4:37PM
Thanks for the overview. Was curious about this, and for 8 bucks a month or so, seemed like a good deal. I'll definitely get around to subscribing :D
Cuksis @ Nov 6th 2009 4:37PM
"F*** You" hahaha
hallowhero @ Nov 6th 2009 4:39PM
You can add stuff to your queue from the program. You just can't search for stuff.

Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 6th 2009 4:52PM
Hey you wanna know somethin'? Someone called me gay before for having a hairstyle other than a redneck crew cut, he came out of the closet a year later. I think people that call other people gay are just insecure about their own sexuality. Not that there is anything that is wrong with gay people.
Emblazin @ Nov 6th 2009 4:53PM

Xbox 360 is all shooters
Ps3 has no games
Wii is for babies.
Thank you.
